About a year ago I loaned an acquaintance some funds to start a small business. Shortly after that my own finances took a hit from the collapse of the economy leaving me cash-strapped for several months. On the other hand, my friend did well with his new venture and recently repaid the loan with a nice return on my investment. With this unexpected cash on hand my wife and I decided to take a trip to improve our spirits.
For me any travel must have some predefined purpose but for my wife travel is its own reward. I decided the purpose of this excursion was to make my wife happy – always a noble purpose well worth the effort. As is always the case, I let the wife choose the destination (within reason of course) which this time was the downtown area of a nearby large city. She was searching for just the right shade of brown boots to complement some outfit she was putting together.
I already knew my day was going to be filled with following my wife from store to store lugging armloads of bags. Having had years to adapt to this activity I have developed an interest in observing the instinctive behavior as demonstrated by the modern female hunter-gatherer. I have learned to predict most actions but I am still occasionally surprised.
Truth be told, I occasionally enjoy a quick glimpse of a shapely thigh exposed by a short skirt or a flash of cleavage from a low-cut top, too. All in honest appreciation of the female form of course. Dirty old man that I am – I remain attentive to my wife and limit my appreciation of the passing scenery to the accidental glimpse rather than the overt stare.
This was a winter trip so I expected my sightseeing opportunities would be limited. My wife on the other hand expected to be rewarded with a large selection of sale prices in every store she visited. I hoped to visit some music stores to check the prices on a dreadnought acoustic guitar I’ve been dreaming of but I really did not expect to find one on this trip.
The trip turned out to be successful on a couple levels. My wife found the boots she wanted and at a rock-bottom price. In a crafts store she bought two packs of assorted scrapbooking papers that I really thought she could have found back home.
I did find a guitar I liked but there was no way I was going to spend more on the shopping trip than my wife. I told her the wood might warp on the cold, damp trip home.
With the money I saved from the guitar non-purchase we were able to splurge on a very nice meal before returning home. A nice meal in a quiet romantic restaurant is also an excellent reason to take a short trip. A friendly and efficient waitress is as much a treat as a glimpse of some nice scenery.
